Dates in Newark History1900 - 19991900 - St. James' Hospital is incorporated April 15, 1901 - The Penn RR begins extensive operations looking to the abolition of its nine grade crossing in Newark. A viaduct of brownstone was erected to cross the city May 29, 1901 - The NJ Historical Society formally opens its library in the building at 16 West Park Street. February 19, 1903 - The Clifton Ave. grade crossing accident occurs in which nine Barringer HS pupils lose their lives and others are injured. The trolley car on which they were riding to school slid down the grade and was struck by a locomotive. A memorial window for the victims was placed in the HS January 1, 1904 - The Shade Tree Commission is established 1906 - First automobile fire engine introduced in Newark. October 22, 1906 - The Morning Star is established December 20, 1906 - Opening of the new City Hall 1908 - "Safe and Sane" Fourth of July commenced. 1909 - The first automobile ambulance is introduced 1910 - The first dental clinics are established November 26, 1910 - The High Street factory fire, corner of Orange, claims 27 lives March 1911 - East Side High School opens February 1, 1912 - Central High School opens September 8, 1913 - South Side High School opens September 16, 1913 - The New Jersey State Normal School, Belleville Ave. and Forth Ave., opens December 13, 1913 - Lincoln Highway opens December 25, 1913 - The first municipal Christmas tree, 48 feet, is erected in Military Park May 10, 1916 - Memorial Drinking Fountain at the foot of Saybrook Pl. is dedicated. 1916 - Infantile paralysis epidemic causing 363 deaths, 1360 cases April 1, 1918 - City trolleys skip stops as a war measure to save fuel
