From: A Story of New Jersey Journalism by William Lewin After the fires of the Revolution had died down, the constitution been adopted, and Washington inaugurated as our first president, John Woods came to Newark and started its first local newspaper. He had served his apprenticeship with Shepard Kollock, founder of the successful New Jersey Journal, and now set up his own press "near the Episcopal Church" of this "delightful village," approximately where the Hahne & Company store stands today. He issued "Woods's Newark Gazette" every Thursday beginning May 19, 1791. Like most of the newspapers of that time, it was a single sheet folded to make four pages about the size of our tabloid dailies of today.
